AEI has worked on Design-Build contracts on both the Owner’s side and on the Contractor’s side.
I-75 Modernization Project (Segments 1, 2 & 3) in Oakland County, Michigan
- AEI assisted WSP, as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Owner’s Representative Team, in the procurement process for the 2016 Design-Build of I-75 from Coolidge Highway to South Boulevard (Segment 1), the 2018 Design-Build of I-75 from 13 Mile Road to Coolidge Highway (Segment 2), and the 2018 Design-Build-Finance-Maintain of I-75 from 8 Mile Road to 13 Mile Road (Segment 3). Combined, the projects include reconstruction of 17.7 miles of roadway and 11 interchanges, and bridge replacement/removal/rehabilitation of 54 structures. AEI prepared the concepts for maintaining traffic on each project, prepared the traffic restriction section in the contract procurement documents, and provided quality assurance reviews of the traffic plan submittals by the Contractor for each segment.

Gordie Howe International Bridge Design-Build Project (Michigan Interchange) in the City of Detroit in Wayne County, Michigan
- AEI was responsible for preparation of the stage construction plans for Package 1 and Package 2 of the Michigan Interchange portion of the Design-Build project to construct a new international bridge crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The plans for Package 1 and Package 2 included staging plans for work on I-75, the I-75 ramps and bridges between Springwells and Clark, the I-75 Service Drives, M-85, and numerous crossroads, including the major crossroads of Springwells, Livernois, Clark and Green.

US-12 Operational and Roadway Improvements near Willow Run in Washtenaw County, Michigan
- AEI assisted in the development of traffic control plans and a Traffic Management Plan for this project, which included a bridge removal, reconstruction of Wiard Road between Tyler Road and US-12, reconfiguration of the US-12 interchange at Wiard Road and reconstruction / rehabilitation on US-12 between Gates Street and Ecorse Road.
